In Ixopo Paton fell in love with Dorrie Francis Lusted. Soon after she was widowed, Paton married her in 1928 and converted to Anglicalism; he was born a Methodist. Dorrie Francis died in 1967 of emphysema. His years with her Paton recorded in Kontakio For You Departed (1969; also: For You Departed).

He attended University of Natal and Maritzburg College. Alan visited Norway and it was there that he developed his ideas and started his first novel Cry, After graduation, Paton worked as a teacher, first at the Ixopo High School, and subsequently at Maritzburg College [2] While at Ixopo he met Dorrie Francis Lusted.

Paton met Dorrie Francis Lusted while teaching at Ixopo High School and the two were married in 1928 and stayed together until her death in 1967. They raised two sons.From 1935 to 1948 he was principal of the Deipkloof Reformatory for delinquent boys near Johannesburg where he introduced many enlightened reforms.
